The Laughing Buddha

Monk named Hotei or Pu-tai

The begging bowl which is often depicted shows the part of a monks life – monks live off what is given or donated by others.

The significance of the bowl – The Buddha (Siddhartha Gautam) came very close to reaching enlightenment when a young woman offered him a bowl of milk rice. However The Buddha was fasting at that time.
