Euphorbia

They are commonly called ‘Spurge’.

‘Spurge’ has been derived from the Middle English /Old French word ‘esperge’ meaning ‘to purge’.

The picture here is of ‘The Crown of Thorns’ (Euphorbia milii).

They are not related to cactus or cacti.

The name ‘Euphorbia’ has been derived from ‘Euphorbos’ (Greek physician) who wrote that Euphorbias (now Euphorbia obtisifolia) was used as a powerful laxative.
