“Why did you call me over for dinner? That too all of a sudden?” asked Jamie.
“Nothing special Jamie. Just wanted to ask you a few questions.” said Dave.
Just then the waiter arrived and poured more wine into their glasses.
“No more now. Got to get home.” said Jamie.
Dave however convinced him to have another round.
“What is it that you want to ask me Dave? We are best of friends, brothers infact. There aren’t any secrets between us, yet you have questions for me?”
“Who is the other woman Jamie?”
“Which woman are you talking about Dave?”
“Don’t act innocent Jamie. I know everything. You lie to your wife about being in the office late at night whereas you actually go visit that womans apartment.”
Jamie got nervous and took a sip from his glass and licked his lips.
“Dave don’t tell Jane about this.”
“Jane knows it too Jamie. Because I told her.”
“No you didn’t!”
“Yes I did Jamie. You failed to commit. Jane is your lawfully wedded wife. And you, Jamie are a cheat. A coward. You deserve to die.”
“Dave buddy I can still fix things. I am sorry.”
“Only if you remain alive Jamie.”
“Wait. What?”
Jamie began choking. His pupils dilated as he gasped for air. He desperately tried sucking air into his mouth but failed.
“Dave…. (gasp, gasp, gasp)…. Help… Me… (gasp, gasp)” said Jamie as he fell from his chair.
The thud made everyones head turn. The other people in the restaurant began mumbling and some rushed forward to help.
Dave acted like he was trying to help Jamie. Someone called the ambulance.
Jamie died within a few seconds. His mouth had foam all over.
Dave slightly turned his head towards the window, Jane was standing outside. Both smiled at each other.
The sorrow that shadowed Jane’s face on knowing about her husband’s affair was too much for Dave to take. So he had decided to take matters into his own hands.
The autopsy report raised no suspicions either. The doctor was Dave’s best friend too.
The other day the table where Dave and Jamie were seated was cordoned off. It was to remain so for maybe a month or until people forgot the incident.
