For this wonderful challenge I have written a short story and it is accompanied by a few pictures of lovely Roses.

The Story behind a Rose

I had this friend in college. She was deeply in love with a guy, our senior. On her birthday she got a lovely bouquet of flowers as a gift from him. But the Roses were the center of attraction. Bright, lovely wine red. Praise the Creator.

As usual, she pressed them in her book “Guide to Mathematics”, to preserve them. Voila! She was successful. She often dried them under the sun so that all the moisture dries up. The book was however stained with the juices coming out of the roses.

One day, the roses got infested with fungus. Eww! But she was blindly in love. She cleaned the fungus with her own hands. Double eww for some and Aww! for others.

But one day she realised his game. Maybe she saw it coming.

He was very rude to her. Called her names. Ill treated her. Left her for another woman (or women), who knew?

Then that lovely bouquet ended up in a huge dustbin. Every petal. Every leaf. Every memory. She made sure nothing remained.

She often quietly thought to herself – “Lord, if my love for him was true, then please show me a sign to prove it.” She didn’t want him back, she just wanted to know whether she really loved him, now knowing that he never really loved her.

That same night God answered her question.

She opened her book “Guide to Mathematics”. She needed to study if she wanted to clear her exams. Just then she saw it.

In the middle of those stained pages, one dried rose. Crisp and lovely.

Upon seeing it she smiled. Now she was satisfied to know that every emotion and feeling in her heart for him were true. Now she had absolutely no regrets. It’s all over for good.

Thank you for reading!
